Stepping Tones

This project centres on a bold reworking of levels to transform a once-cramped and disconnected lower ground floor into a warm, spatially rich interior. The key move was the complete redesign of the staircase, which was opened up to the floor above — introducing a dramatic vertical form that immediately expands the sense of volume and connection across levels.

The interiors were stripped back to reveal the building’s raw fabric. Bare brick walls were exposed and painted, bringing texture and depth, while original timber joists and a new steel frame were left visible to emphasise the honesty of the structure. These industrial elements are balanced by the generous use of natural materials — oak is used throughout for stair treads, joinery and the bespoke kitchen, lending warmth and tactility to the space. The lower ground floorplan was opened up into a fluid kitchen, dining and living area, designed around framed views to a newly reimagined garden. A two-level terrace — one sunken, one raised — draws light deep into the plan and establishes a much stronger visual and spatial connection to the outdoors. Every detail, from the integrated furniture to the finely finished stair junctions, was designed to enhance the flow and feeling of generosity within the compact footprint. The result is a calm, characterful space that feels at once grounded, expressive and deeply connected to its surroundings.
