: London
Coffey Architects’ Meadow Grove is a carefully composed, light-filled family home in Barnes, London, located just a street behind the River Thames. The design is shaped around strong geometry and a thoughtful use of space, positioning the house as a sequence of transitions defined by light, volume and material character. The project is the result of a close collaboration with the homeowner, an inspired interior designer, whose influence is evident throughout the interiors. The building’s angular massing responds to its context, stepping back as it moves toward the garden to protect privacy and daylight access. From the street, it presents a calm and symmetrical elevation. Inside, the geometry becomes more expressive, creating sculptural volumes and dramatic sightlines. A triple-height void sits at the centre of the home, anchored by a stair that connects all levels and acts as a focal point for the shifting arrangement of spaces. Natural light plays a central role. Large glazed openings allow daylight to reach deep into the plan, bringing life to surfaces and materials. Oak, clay plaster, stone and marble respond to changing light with subtle texture and tone. This quiet palette adds depth without distraction. The upper floors contain three bedrooms and bathrooms, with a spacious master suite occupying the top level. Below, a double-height stair leads to a generous lower ground floor with living areas, a cinema room and a private bar. Meadow Grove is a home defined by clarity, material richness and a shared design vision between architect and client.
