: Wandsworth
Nestled away from Wandsworth High Street, Argyll House, previously a commercial office building, has undergone a complete transformation to meet London's rising housing demands. This new development features a housing-led mixed-use building, comprising 17 apartments and flexible commercial space on the ground floor. The building’s material palette draws from local precedents and remains respectfully subservient to the adjacent All Saints Church. Its contemporary form, defined by a clear plinth and banding, reinterprets traditional mixed-use buildings with a modular approach. High-quality detailing ensures the scheme integrates seamlessly with both the historic context and evolving streetscape. Visible from Wandsworth Plain, the side elevation features three brick tones that express the building’s stepped massing: light green glazed bricks at the front reflect planted terraces; dark marine green bricks sit mid-block; and white bricks to the rear reduce the visual bulk. Internally, generous floor-to-ceiling windows flood the apartments with natural light, complemented by exposed concrete ceilings that add a refined industrial character. Interior designers SceneSmith extended the building’s natural palette indoors, using soft furnishings and neutral tones to create calm, harmonious spaces. The development promotes biodiversity with planted private terraces for all residents and a tranquil communal rooftop garden. Each home has been allocated a micro allotment, providing space for residents to plant seeds, grow vegetables, and connect with nature, enhancing overall wellbeing. Argyll House is a highly efficient, gas-free building, powered by renewable air-source heat pumps. Every element, from materials to landscaping, has been thoughtfully considered to complement its celebrated Wandsworth setting.
