Telford Homes’ Equipment Works site in Walthamstow has transformed a previously industrial site into a high-quality urban environment, providing over 300 new homes as well as high-quality commercial space for local enterprise, including start-up businesses and local entrepreneurs.

Influenced by the industrial heritage narrative and local landscape, the scheme has been designed to promote free movement through the landscape to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for residents and the local community. A beautiful public square at the centre of the site provides an engaging community space containing informal seating, green edges, and planting and improved public access connecting local neighbouring schemes. Equipment works is designed to promote a car-free development, with pedestrian priority access across all spaces, clearly marked to create and promote higher pedestrian movement and social activity. This placemaking, allied with a biodiverse rich landscape, underpins the potential for community cohesion, vitality and improved wellbeing. What’s more, sustainable practices have been included in every element of the development’s design and creation - from the installation of Photovoltaic panels on the taller residential buildings, where they will be most efficient, and green roofs on all other areas - to connection to the local low-carbon district heating network.
