The Silk District

Mount Anvil

: L&Q as JV partner

The Silk District, developed by Mount Anvil in joint venture with L&Q, is an outstanding apartment development in East London. Located in Whitechapel, it celebrates the area’s industrial heritage while delivering a range of bold, modern homes for the local area’s multitude of people and culture.

Across three buildings, the tenure-blind mix of 700 apartments has a variety of homes, including 32% affordable housing. More than 30% of the site is dedicated to new landscaped walking routes, while the ground floor includes 32,000 sq ft of commercial space. As The Silk District’s a large scheme with significant impact on Whitechapel’s evolving urban character, it was essential to meet the highest design standards. The scheme demonstrates Mount Anvil’s skill in creating tall buildings, with its location posing a new challenge to ensure the scheme is considerate and appropriate of the area’s historical context. Furthermore, Mount Anvil was conscious of how the scheme’s design would stand the test of time. To improve efficiency and sustainability, Mount Anvil maximised repetition of the prefabricated structure and cladding, which reduced waste and saved time. The materials used for the facade were switched from stone to grey brick on courtyard elevations as it is less likely to become stained over time. Beyond the urban environment, the scheme carefully considered how it provides residents with an outstanding living experience. From elegant details, layouts that maximise light and private balconies to world-class gym amenities that include Peloton bikes, the Silk District offers a living experience like no other.
