The Potter's House
Lowell Design and Build
: London
The Potter’s house is a renovation of a three bedroom semi-detached family home and building of a new pottery studio outbuilding in East London. Sarah, the client, came to us looking for a soulful addition to their beautiful Edwardian home, as well as a pottery studio in the rear of the generous back garden. The client, originally from Scotland was influenced by childhood memories of retreats rural bothies and connecting with the surrounding Scottish landscape. This heavily influenced our design language for the project and created a result which is completely unique that feels right for the client and for the house. The natural material palette of the rear extension and the studio outbuilding makes use of the same Permachar timber, creating a symmetry between these additions and sensitively juxtaposes themselves from the original building.Lowell design and build are a collective of architects, designers and master craftspeople. We were able to deliver a seamless turnkey service from initial design to completion with an unweaning attention to detail throughout the process. This allowed the client to continue living in the upper floors of the house during the build with their young children. The client has later developed the rear garden landscaping themselves, further connecting the new studio outbuilding with the new rear extension along a garden trail. The large oak tree in the centre of the garden anchors the studio outbuilding and the rear extension to the natural landscape.
