The Island
Will Gamble
: Newquay, Cornwall
Perched on a granite outcrop off the coast of Newquay, The Island is a cherished landmark, defined by its modest form, striking red roof, and enduring presence in the Cornish landscape. Connected to the mainland by a simple pedestrian bridge, it holds deep cultural value for locals and visitors alike. Our client set an ambitious brief: to double the size of the bungalow without altering its iconic appearance from the coastline. The challenge required a highly sensitive design approach – one that would preserve its heritage and character while transforming it into a contemporary, energy-efficient home better connected to its surroundings. Will Gamble responded with an innovative design and delivery strategy that prioritised both conservation and performance. The building was reoriented internally to maximise panoramic sea views and strengthen its relationship with the landscape, all while maintaining its external identity. A deep retrofit was central to the project. With no access to gas and high operational costs, the scheme significantly upgraded the building’s thermal performance. High-performance insulation, improved airtightness, and carefully integrated fabric enhancements reduced energy demand while respecting the existing structure. The result is a seamless expansion that meets the client’s aspirations: a modern, comfortable home that remains visually unchanged from the coastline. This project demonstrates how thoughtful design and technical innovation can unlock new potential within highly-constrained, heritage-sensitive contexts - ensuring The Island continues to endure as a sustainable and much-loved coastal landmark.
