Newton Park Place
ROAR
: Chislehurst
Newton Park Place is a sensitively bold oak-framed extension to a Grade II listed Victorian home in Chislehurst, South East London. Designed for homeowner Kelly Johnson, the project adds 30sqm of warm, natural material–led space that redefines the home’s relationship with its garden while embracing sustainability and heritage in equal measure. The brief was to create a contemporary, low-impact addition that offered new living and dining spaces for a growing family — but without mimicking the past. ROAR proposed a distinctly modern timber extension that harmonises through contrast: exposed European oak joists, soft lime render, and a green wildflower roof create a language of warmth and calm, rooted in nature. The layout avoids the typical open-plan "super room" model, instead carving out distinct yet connected zones, including a skylit dining nook and a sun-soaked living area that opens fully to the garden. Externally, the pergola of oak joists offers shade, privacy, and structure for climbing plants, further softening the architectural lines. Inside, a 3m-deep spiral wine cellar and tactile oak finishes elevate everyday rituals. Sustainability was embedded from the start: locally sourced oak, wood fibre insulation, solar panels, breathable materials, and a low-carbon construction process all contribute to a fossil fuel–free, high-performance home. The extension respects and enhances the listed building, offering a timeless response that is crafted, contextual, and deeply personal.
