Britwell Ex-Servicemen Club Residential Development

Slough Urban Renewal and Stride Treglown

Located to the northern edge of Slough, Britwell development provides twelve affordable homes together with a new club premises on a site formerly occupied by the Ex-Servicemen Club. The land was previously underused, and predominantly occupied by an oversized club building. The redevelopment has improved Slough’s housing stock by providing much-needed affordable family accommodation for the council, while retaining its previous role as a place hosting the club.

The houses’ form was kept simple, solid and built to a high standard to create a well-designed urban space, which complements and enhances the surrounding area. An extensive, collaborative consultation process was undertaken with the local planning officers and the club members. Incorporating many of their suggestions into the design resulted in a successful integration of the scheme into the neighbouring areas. The materials used match the local palette, with the use of brick and concrete roof tiles, whereas the scale and height of the dwellings contributes to the variety of street and roof scape. A clear ‘front and back’ relationship has been created through fenestration layout, which is typical to the existing houses around the site.
