Creating Space for Connection, Belonging and Wellbeing

We often overlook how profoundly the built environment shapes our mood, health, and relationships. It is not only the size or quality of our homes that matters, but the spaces between buildings—the shared, social, and green places that influence the rhythms of daily life. Nature-rich environments are proven to enhance wellbeing, yet even in cities full of parks and trees, people of all ages are experiencing what the UK Government has called “the greatest public health challenge of our time”: loneliness. Social isolation is now widely recognised as a critical public health issue. Thoughtful spatial design can help counteract this, but older people—especially those living with dementia and their carers—remain among the most vulnerable and most overlooked. Botanical Place reimagines the UK high street and the future of later-life living. By integrating sustainable retirement housing with civic amenities and a biodiverse public realm, the project meets the needs of an ageing population while revitalising West Byfleet. It demonstrates that older residents are a vital force enriching their economic, social, and cultural life. For decades, later-living communities—especially those with dementia—have been isolated on town edges and disconnected from everyday life. Botanical Place does the opposite. It places older people at the centre of a once-declining high street, embedding them within a vibrant, mixed-use community where they can live well, independently, and with dignity.
